WELCOME TO GALWAY, CITY OF THE TRIBES
Anyone who happened to be near Galway city centre on 24 May 2009 knows exactly why this windswept party town had to host a stopover. It was cold, rainy and the clock was showing 4am. Most of the boats had arrived, but some were still at sea. An yet the crowds were measurable by the thousand (about 10,000, actually). The atmosphere, it was unanimously agreed within the fleet, was better than almost anyone had experienced in their sport. It is a delightful medieval city. There are, as you would expect, plenty of lovely bars and restaurants, and the cliché about the warmth of the Irish seems to hold true. What the comparatively small and enthusiastic population seemingly enabled in the last race was a greater connection between the event and host city than you tend to feel in the bigger places. Very few people would have been disappointed to see Galway win their bid.
